Help to Get out of Debt: Credit Counseling

If you are in serious financial or debt problems then one way out might be to consider credit counseling. There are credit counseling agencies and companies in almost every major and medium sized community in the country. They work by charging you a fee and a percentage of your consolidated debt in order to develop a plan to lift you out of your personal financial crisis.

Here are a few tips to finding and using a credit counseling service:

1. Do Your Research
Check our your phone book under debt management or credit counseling services. There are two types of credit counseling operations, one for profit and the other not for profit. You can find out more information about any of these services by checking online at their website. Then call them up and ask to speak to one of their agents. Ask them about their process, what their fees or charges are and make an appointment to see them as soon as possible.

2. Meet Your Credit Counselor
Bring all your materials with you including your latest bill and credit card statements and your most recent pay stub. Be honest and answer all of their questions truthfully. They can't help you unless they have the full picture and once they check your credit score they will have access to all of that information anyway.

3. Review your Plan
Your credit counseling agency or firm will determine the extent of your debt problems and calculate your ability to repay based on your current income. Together with you they will develop a debt consolidation plan. Once you agree they will contact all of your creditors and negotiate a repayment plan that will have you pay an agreed upon amount each month to pay your creditors back what you can over a period of time. If you need help then SurfintheSpirit.com offers a Christian debt reduction program.
